Famous People - Singapore
I missed out on this topic so I'm going to write it now.
Lee Kuan Yew (Minister Mentor
Singapore is a very tiny country as compared to other bigger countries. But she has her fair share of famous people. One of them being the most famous (in my point of view) is our Minister Mentor, Lee Kuan Yew. One of the most influential politicians in Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew played an important role in building Singapore into what she is today. He was the one who brought our country into independence, and was also Singapore's first Prime Minister (1959 - 1990), as well as Senior Prime Minister (1990 - 2004). Lee Kuan Yew has two sons (Lee Hsien Loong and Lee Hsien Yang) and one daughter (Lee Wei Ling). His elder son, Lee Hsien Loong is Singapore's current Prime Minister. Our Minister Mentor is widely respected by Singaporeans as he had assisted in helping Singapore grow from a developing country into one of the most developed countries in the world. He has also published a two-volume set of memoirs: The Singapore Storey and From Third World To First: The Singapore Storey.
Stephanie Sun (Singer)
Stephanie Sun, or Sun Yan Zi was first discovered in 2000 and her debut album, entitled "I am Sun Yanzi" was a successful hit and she slowly began to gain fame since then. Besides being famous in Singapore, Stephanie is also very well-received at Taiwan. She is in fact one of the most popular singers in Taiwan. There isn't a single person that I know that has never heard of or dislike Stephanie Sun. That's how well-liked she is. Stephanie has also received numerous awards. In 2000, Stephanie was named the Most Promising Artiste at the Singapore Hit Awards. In 2001, she was awarded with the Best Newcomer Award at the Golden Melody Awards held in Taiwan. In the same year, Stephanie received 5 nominations at the Singapore Hit Awards. She is indeed Singapore's pride.
Zoe Tay (Actress)
Zoe Tay is one of my favourite actresses. She started out as a model, and was later discovered in after the Star Search in 1988 that she was persuaded by friends to enter. Zoe gave a brilliant performance and emerged a winner with a contract with the local tv station. From there, her acting career began to soar. She has since become a critically acclaimed actress and a household name, appeared in numerous drama serials and has been awarded Top 10 Most Popular Artistes Awards in the Singapore's Annual Star Awards. Our local tv station has recently established that should an artiste be awarded with the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes Awards for 10 years, he/she will no longer be eligible for that award. Zoe was one of the few artistes who has been honoured with that award for 10 years and was awarded with a special award along with two other equally famous male artistes.
Fandi Ahmad (Soccer player)
Fandi Ahmad is a well-known soccer player in Singapore. He was the youngest player ever to join the senior national team in 1978. He was only 16 years old then. In 1980, Fandi played a lead role in emerging victorious against Selangor in the Malaysia Cup tournament. Then in 1988,
Fandi won the Golden Boot Award for the Malaysia Cup season. He had also returned to play for Singapore in the South East Asia games in 1983, 85 and 89 and helped the team win a silver medal in each of these games. In 1993, Fandi became Captain for our National Team and retired in 1997. To commemorate his contributions to Singapore football, Fandi was honoured with the Public Service Medal in 1994. He was also appointed as a council member of the Football Association of Singapore in the year 2001, the youngest and the first former international to do so. For more information on Fandi, do visit his page in the Sports Museum's Hall of Fame here.
